S15 Gearbox

Recommended Posts

As stated in past discussion, it is found that the S15 box is disgusting, but sustainable. Power can be handled only with respect from the driver.

Now.... My gearbox on my s15 is suffering from the thrust bearing noise pollution, (a whinging of bearings when clutch is not engage) this has been in effect for a while now, not hindering my driving experience. ( plus, if fixed... i know soon enough, a bigger application of power will only result in the bearings making the same noise ) but now i have noticed that under hard throttle is 2nd,3rd,4th so on.. but gearbox is making a whistle noise???? (how bizarr!!) clutch is standard, little bit warn... slips occasionally here and there - odo - 75,000 km's power output is minimal with exhaust, FMIC, filter, manifold and boost. my driving is very respectable. no snapping of gears - only on the occasional squirt hear and there.

Do you think that maybe my gearbox is on the way out? or

it is a combination of clutch on the way out with bearings making the noise???

anyfeed back will be roid???!!!!!! cheers guys. :woot:

yeah the whining noise is either from thrust bearing or another bearing. just get a new bearing they are cheap dude. max $50

the whistling sound could be a boost leak, i used to have both noises. after a head gasket change and a new clutch/bearing both noises are gone.

does the noise happen when the car is nuetral??

does it happen in all gears? or only certain gears?

Thrust bearing is commonly a very harsh growling sound, Input shaft bearing starts off as a very very slight whinge and will get louder and louder that will happen in all gears and when the car is in nuetral at idle, if it is only on certain gears (normally under load) will b the gear itself will have pitt marks on it.

Its hard 2 diagnose without driving the car when its a gearbox issue, I use 2 work in a gearbox place and we did heaps of S15 boxes common problem is the input shaft bearing (as with all nissan box's) also ppl use 6th to often when its not needed and the gear actually welds itself to the main shaft as it doesnt have enough oil flow due to the low speed.Hope that can help you out.

Thrust bearings make noise only when the clutch is engaged, so if your box is whining with the clutch out, it's not your thrust bearing.

More likely the bearing on the input or output shaft. If it makes noise in neutral, input shaft. Like Morris, I'd be puttin money on input bearing.

Car makes the whinging/ growling noise when clutch in not engaged in nuetral! the whistle/chiming noise - only comes up under hard throttle - bought 13psi the noise will appear. I have just ordered a heavy duty from queensland with throw out bearing to fix the whinging/groining, wont be in till next weekish, and install that same week. so will lets you's know how the clutch and noise goes! the whistle/chiming noise is still a mystery???? HOW DOES this sound?? i pulled intercooler plumbing off last week - could possibly have the smallest of airleaks from plumbing, and happenes under hard pressure!!! thats what my turbo specialist has said could be the promblem, didnt have time to have a thorough look- thinks box is sweet as. - Let me know what you's think?

sounds like a boost leak then dude dont mean to be patronising in any way but when you do intercooler hose's never use a screw driver always use either a 1/4 or 3/8 ratchet,

I dont think that changing the thrust bearing is going to get rid of the gearbox noise from what you have said sounds like input shaft bearing to me, When you have the gearbox out check the bearing by roating the input shaft - have the box in nuetral and just give it a few turns you should b able 2 feel it if the bearing is on the way out, If that bearing is on its way out get it fixed asap as if u keep driving the bearing will collapse causing very serous damage to the cluster and other gears - and esp 4th gear (which is the input shaft) and the syncro/hub.

noisy idle / thrust bearing is common

if the g/box feels worn put some shockproof lightweight in it - make shifting smooth again

whistle under load - possible air leak / belt slip

Thankyou for posting this up, that noise has been driving me nuts, and funny enuf i've got both worn release bearing and leaking exhaust manifold.

Seein this pose puts rest the mechanical nightmare i was suffering while roadtripping with weird noises

Yeah i love it too

Tho people with eating disorders tend to be insulted by that picture, which i do sincerely apologise for as its sole purpose is comedic and in no was is used to maliciously hurt persons of that demographic.
